Wondering why no Windows 11 version has been released yet? The question should rather be whether Microsoft is even considering a new version of the operating system. We have the answers for you.
Windows 11 will probably not exist
After Windows 7 and 8, Windows 10 followed. The (almost) logical consequence would be a version of Windows 11.
- Microsoft has changed its distribution strategy. There will probably be no "successor" to Windows 10 in the sense of a new version number.
- Rather, Windows 10 should and will be the last version. The operating system is to be sold as "Windows as a Service" in the future.
- In contrast to the previous strategy, Windows should no longer be available in stores as a copy of the operating system. For the first time, the concept of downloading was applied as an update to Windows 10.
- So Microsoft turns a product distribution into a service.
- By the way, we also explain why there is no Windows 9.
Microsoft plans to use Windows 10 as the standard operating system
Microsoft is adopting Apple's strategy. Mac OS versions have only been available for download from the manufacturer for a long time. Users do not have to go to a store first, but can download the latest version directly onto their Mac without much effort.
- Completely new operating systems are not thrown onto the market every few years, as was previously the case. Windows 10 is defined as the standard for this - and is constantly being developed.
- Innovations should be offered via updates. The updates then extend Windows 10 regularly.
- Every version of Windows has a certain lifespan. According to the Windows lifecycle fact sheet, support for Windows 10 will end in 2025.
- However, this does not mean the end of Windows 10 - and also not the appearance of Windows 11. Rather, the end of support then affects a specific update, the subsequent ones are also supported for ten years.
- The logical consequence would actually be to name the operating system only Windows instead of Windows 10. Will the version number eventually disappear? There is no information from Microsoft about this.
