What is the mysterious Windows 7 Black Edition? Do they even exist? Can you buy them or even download them online? There are few but simple answers to this question.
Windows 7 Black Edition - a fake, but not a hoax
The Windows 7 Black Edition was created during the beta phase of Windows 7. Even before a publicly available beta version was made available by Microsoft, these versions appeared in BitTorrent. They run without a serial number and therefore did not require activation. The beta expiration date had also been removed. There are apparently several versions that have been "upgraded" with various desktop themes. The Black Edition is not compatible with all hardware. The main differences from the "normal" version of Windows 7 are:
- Illegal, hacked beta version
- No support from Microsoft
- Malware, Trojans and botnets may already be preinstalled
- No updates, service packs etc.
Illegal version of Windows 7 without Microsoft's blessing
For security reasons, you should prefer to keep your hands off Windows 7 Black Edition. The official Microsoft version is now available for around 40 euros; even the successor Windows 8 costs only 50 euros at the time of this article (March 2013).
