If Windows 7 does not recognize your scanner, this can have various causes. In this practical tip, we explain how you can deal with the problem.
Windows 7: Scanner is not recognized
With multifunction devices, printers and scanners are usually combined in one device. If your PC with Windows 7 only recognizes the printer and not a scanner, you can try the following.
- There may be a compatibility problem with older devices in particular. Most of the time, manufacturers no longer offer new drivers for their devices that are compatible with a newer operating system. In this case, it is best to contact the manufacturer directly and search for the appropriate driver on their website. If this is no longer available, contact customer service.
- If only the printer is recognized but the scanner is not, you can alternatively use the "Windows Fax and Scan" function and still use your device with limited functionality. "Windows Fax and Scan" can be found in the Start menu under "All Programs".
- In the open program, select "Scan" and click on "New Scan".
- Under "Profile" you select whether you want to scan a document or an image. Various templates can also be edited.
- The preview function gives you a first impression of the end result. Then click on "Scan".
- The scan function should also be usable with an older device.
- If the scan function still does not work, you can still search for a WIA driver (Windows Image Acquisition). Windows 7 needs this to recognize a scanner. To do this, search for your device model and "WIA driver" on the Internet.
