Windows 7: Error 651 - how to fix it
Error 651 can occur when establishing an Internet connection under Windows 7, but you can correct this yourself. We'll show you how it's done.
Fix error 651 on Windows 7
Try to access the Internet using a network cable. If error 651 is subsequently reported, this is usually only due to a faulty file. This is "raspppoe.sys" and must be replaced. If you don't succeed in this approach, test the solution in the second paragraph.
- First, you need to get the same file from a computer that has Windows Vista installed. It is best to ask a friend or colleague about this.
- Press the "Windows" and "E" keys simultaneously so that the Explorer opens. Enter the following path in the address bar above: "C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers".
- Here you will find the "raspppoe.sys" file. Cut this out and place the file on your desktop. Then paste the same Windows Vista file into the folder.
- After a restart, the connection to the Internet should be possible again. If this is not the case, read on in the second paragraph. If the file cannot be replaced, first follow the instructions in the third paragraph.
Error 651: Make changes to the connection
- Press the "Windows" and "R" keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "ncpa.cpl" there and click the "OK" button.
- A new window opens in which you can select your LAN connection. Right-click on this and select the "Properties" item.
- Click on the "Configure" button above and select the "Advanced" tab.
- Select the item "Speed & Duplex" in the list and set the value on the right to "10 Mbit / s full duplex" (see picture).
- Then click the "OK" button and restart the computer.
Solution: Allow access to raspppoe.sys
If Windows does not allow you to replace the raspppoe.sys file, you must adjust the access rights.
- Right-click on the file and select "Properties".
- Under the "Security" tab, click the "Advanced" button below.
- Under the "Owner" tab, you can change the owner to your administrator account via the "Edit" item.
- Then close all windows with "OK". The file can now be replaced.
