Windows 7: Disable indexing - how it works
If you do not use the search function under Windows 7, you should deactivate indexing. This saves you a lot of resources. We'll show you how it's done.
Disable indexing in Windows 7
The indexing service always runs in the background under Windows and documents all changes to files. So you can search your system faster. If you do not use the search function in the Start menu or Explorer, the process only eats resources unnecessarily. Therefore you should deactivate the feature:
- Press the "Windows" and "R" keys at the same time so that the Run dialog opens.
- Enter "services.msc" there and confirm by clicking "OK".
- Look for "Windows Search" in the list of services pretty far down.
- Double-click the entry to open the "Properties".
- Switch to the "General" tab. Select the "Deactivated" option under the "Start type" category.
- If you then confirm with "OK", the service will no longer be used from the next restart.
To get even more out of Windows 7, you can also create your own keyboard shortcuts.
