Windows 7: reboot and select proper boot device - what to do?
If the message "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device" appears when Windows starts, something is wrong with the hard drive. The causes can be many, but you can fix most of the problems yourself. We'll show you how it's done.
Windows 7 problem solving: Reboot and select proper boot device
The problem can be with the BIOS or with the Windows system. Therefore, there are relatively many options to choose from, which you should try in order. Proceed to the next step if the previous one has not led to success.
- Boot priority: First of all, you should put the hard disk in the BIOS first in the boot priority. You can read how this works in this practical tip. Carry out the procedure as described, but place the hard disk first instead of the CD as described.
- Repair start partition: Insert the original Windows 7 DVD when starting. If you do not have this, press the "F8" key at startup so that the "advanced startup options" open, in which you can select the item "Repair your computer". Under "Computer Repair Options" you will find the "System Startup Repair" which you should then start (see picture).
- Repair boot sector and master boot record MBR: If the system startup repair did not solve the problem, you can try to repair these two areas manually. Instructions for this can also be found here with us, both for the boat sector and for the Master Boot Record MBR
- Unplug hard drive: If nothing helps, it is probably due to the hardware. Advanced users can try unplugging the hard drive and then plugging it in again. Installation in another PC could also clarify the condition of the hard drive.
If all of these tips are not noticeably successful, you should consult an expert. Before doing so, be sure to get a quote. Depending on the age and condition of the PC, this may not be worth it. This practical tip shows you how you can put together a new PC online.
