Windows 7: support ends - what to do?
Windows 7 support is slowly coming to an end. In this tip, we explain what you now have to consider as a Windows 7 user and when it is worth converting to a newer operating system.
Windows 7: mainstream support has ended - what now?
Basic support for Windows 7 has been discontinued by Microsoft. That happened on January 13, 2015. You do not have to throw Windows 7 off your hard drive and install Windows 8, for example. You can still use Windows 7 without worries until 2020, but you should note the following points.
- In addition to basic support, there is "Extended Support", which will continue to run for all Windows 7 users until 2020.
- You will still receive the latest security updates, but there are no new functions for Windows 7.
- Check whether you have activated the Windows update function in order to be constantly supplied with the latest updates.
- For security reasons you should make system backups. This can be done using the internal Windows backup function or software such as Paragon Backup & Recovery.
- Be sure to install a virus scanner. Avira or avast are ideal.
- For security reasons, the programs on your PC should also be as up to date as possible. Programs such as the Chip Updater ensure that you keep an eye on the versions of the software.
- Also remove unnecessary and unused programs from your hard drive. In this way you reduce the attack surface for hacking attacks.
