If you receive an error message with the error code 0x80070003 during the Windows update under Windows 8.1, you can delete the temporary update files and restart the update service.
Windows 8.1 - Stop update service
To delete the temporary files, you must first stop the update service.
- Open the "Run" dialog by pressing the Windows key + R.
- Enter "services.msc" in the field and press Enter.
- If necessary, enter the administrator password.
- Find the "Windows Update" service in the list, right-click on it and select "Stop".
Windows 8.1 update - delete temporary files
Open the folders "C: // Windows / SoftwareDistribution / DataStore" and "C: // Windows / SoftwareDistribution / Download". In both folders you have to delete all files and subfolders.
