Many users complain about WLAN problems after an update to Windows 8.1. You can usually solve these problems with a few simple measures.
WLAN problems with Windows 8.1: FIPS compatibility
Some users report a simple method in forums that often leads to success:
- Start the Control Panel and click on "Network and Sharing Center".
- Click on your WiFi network and then click on "Wireless Properties".
- Select the "Security" tab and click on "Advanced Settings".
- Now deactivate the FIPS compatibility and confirm with "OK".
- If the option is already deactivated, activate it, confirm with "OK" and call the window again to deactivate the option again.
- Restart the PC. If the problems persist, continue with the next steps.
WLAN problems with Windows 8.1 .: Update driver
The problem often lies in the drivers provided by Microsoft. Installing the manufacturer drivers can help. To do this, switch to the manufacturer's website of your network adapter. If you do not know which network adapter you are using, you can check the device manager.
- Press Win + R on the keyboard and select "Device Manager".
- Switch to "Network adapter" and look for the adapter that has "wireless" in its name. Download the appropriate driver to your computer from the manufacturer.
- Right-click on the network adapter in the device manager and select "Update driver".
- Select "Search my computer for driver software" and select the driver you downloaded earlier.
- Follow the installation instructions. Then restart your PC.
- If the problem is not resolved, go to the next step.
WLAN problem: Registry - activate full access
Often the problem is restricted access. The computer then shows a connection to the WLAN, but it is limited. In this case the Internet protocol IP / TCP must be reset.
- Open the registry as administrator. To do this, go to the start page, enter "regedit" and right-click on the entry found. Then select "Run as administrator".
- In the registry, change to the path "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Nsi \ {eb004a00-9b1a-11d4-9123-0050047759bc} \ 26".
- Right-click on the "26" folder and select "Permissions".
- Under "Full access" you now place a checkmark next to "Allow" (see picture).
- Confirm with "OK" and close the registration.
- Next, open Command Prompt as an administrator. Follow the same procedure as for the registry. Enter "cmd" as the search term.
- Enter "netsh int ip reset C: \ resetlog.txt" (without "") and confirm with Enter.
- Finally, restart the computer. The problem should now be solved. If not, go to the next step.
Modify energy management
In rare cases, the problem is that the computer's power management disables the network adapter when it is needed.
- Open the device manager and navigate to the wireless network adapter (see above).
- Right click on it and select "Properties".
- Switch to the Power Management tab and remove the checkmark from "Computer can switch off the device to save energy".
- Confirm with "OK" and restart your computer.
