Windows 8.1: Safe startup is not configured correctly
If you see the message "Safe start is not configured correctly" on the desktop after the update to Windows 8.1, this is a widespread problem. However, this can be remedied. We show you several options.
Windows 8.1: Safe startup is not configured correctly
To fix the problem, first try to activate the "Secure Boot" option in the UEFI (the BIOS of Win8). Windows also wants to secure your system before it starts. If the instructions in the next steps do not work for you, we will give you two more solutions below.
- Start your computer and click on the button with the power symbol at the bottom right of the login screen.
- Here you have three options. Hold down the "Shift" key on your keyboard (a key above the "Ctrl" key) and at the same time click "Restart" with the mouse.
- After a short wait you will see a blue screen. Select the "Troubleshooting" item there.
- Then click on the "Advanced Options" and open the "UEFI Firmware Settings". To do this, click on the "Restart" button.
- After a short wait, the UEFI opens, which looks similar to a normal BIOS. Under the "Security" tab, you must now switch the "Secure Boot" option to "Enabled".
- Then exit the UEFI via the "Exit" tab with the "Exit Saving Changes" option. The watermark on the desktop should now be gone.
- Alternatively, you can skip the first 4 steps by opening the UEFI in this way.
Reset Win 8.1 computer
Important: The solution described above does not always work. If this is the case for you, Microsoft recommends the following alternative approaches:
- Reset BIOS to factory settings
- Reset computers running Windows 8.1
