Refresh Windows 8 - Here's how
In Windows 8, you can refresh your computer for the first time. This will reset all Windows files, but your personal data will be retained. We'll show you how the new feature works.
Windows 8: Refresh instead of reinstall
- Move the mouse into the upper or lower right corner of the screen so that the Charm Bar opens.
- Select "Settings" at the bottom and then "PC Settings".
- A new window opens in which you select the "Restore" option under "Update / Restore" on the left.
- There you will find the item "Refresh your PC without affecting the files" and the associated button "Let's go".
- After a short wait, you will be informed which data will disappear and what remains on your computer. Think again if you don't want to save certain data after all. Then click Next".
- After waiting again, the "Refresh" button appears. Click on it, Windows 8 will be refreshed.
- Now you don't have to do anything. Windows gets to work and restarts frequently. The whole process can take between 10 and 20 minutes. It depends on the speed of your computer.
- When the process is complete, Windows restarts and you have to log on. Then your PC is "prepared". Again, this can take a few minutes.
- When this process is complete, Windows is refreshed. Your data is still in its old place. All apps that you have installed will also be reloaded. Only all Windows settings and programs installed in desktop mode have disappeared and must be reinstalled.
