If you are bothered by the Charm Bar of Windows 8, you can switch it off in a few steps. Here we explain how to do it.
Switch off the Charm Bar in the registry
If you move the mouse pointer into the top right corner of the screen, Windows 8 displays the so-called Charm Bar. This gives you, among other things, access to the start menu, the search function or the system settings. If the Charm Bar bothers you, you can deactivate it with an additional entry in the registry.
- Enter the term "regedit" (without quotation marks) in the start menu. Start the "regedit.exe" file.
- Navigate to the path "HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ ImmersiveShell".
- Right-click on the "ImmersiveShell" folder and select "New" and then "Key".
- Enter "EdgeUI" (without quotation marks) as the name for the new key.
- Select the new "EdgeUI" folder and then right-click in the free area in the right half of the program window.
- First select "New" and then "DWORD value (32-bit)". Enter "DisableCharmsHint" (without quotation marks) as the name.
- Double click on "DisableCharmsHint". Enter the value "1" (without the quotation marks).

Windows 8.1 users can deactivate the Charm Bar even more easily. You only need a few clicks of the mouse:
- Right-click in the free area of the taskbar and select "Properties".
- Switch to the "Navigation" tab. In the "Corner navigation" area, remove the checkmark from "Show charms when pointing to the upper right corner".
- Confirm the change with the OK button.
