Windows 8: move your own files - so it'll work
In Windows 8 you can move the "My Documents" folder, i.e. change the location of your personal videos, music and documents. If you want to be on the safe side, you can even move the folder to another hard drive or partition. We show you how to do this.
Step 1: move your own files under Windows 8
First cut out all folders belonging to My Documents and paste them back into the desired directory.
- To do this, open Windows Explorer with the key combination [Windows] + [E] and switch to "This PC".
- Then change to the path "C: / User / your username".
- Select all folders that you want to move from "My Documents" by clicking on them individually while holding down the [Ctrl] key.
- Now right-click on one of the selected folders and choose the "Cut" option.
- Navigate to the new directory in Explorer and create a "Data" folder here. To do this, click on "New folder" above, enter a folder name and confirm with Enter.
- Open the folder and right-click in the empty area. With "Paste" you can save the cut folders here.
Step 2: Adjust the path of your own files under Windows 8
So that Windows knows where your personal files are now, you have to adjust the storage path.
- Open Windows Explorer again. In the left column, right-click on one of the folders, for example "Music", and select the "Properties".
- Here you switch to the "Path" tab and click on the "Move" option.
- Then select the "Music" folder you just moved and confirm with "OK".
- Repeat this step for all other folders of your own files.
