Windows 8: repartition hard drive - how it works
If you want to divide your data into several areas, you can repartition your hard drive under Windows 8. We show you how to do this.
Step 1: Show partitions of the hard drive under Windows 8
- Press the [Windows] and [R] keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "diskmgmt.msc" here and confirm with "OK". Then the disk management opens.
- Below you will find all hard drives in a list and their partitions in a row next to it.
Step 2: repartition hard drive in Windows 8
If you want to create a new partition, you must first shrink a larger partition. The reduction frees up space, which is then allocated to a new partition. This process can be repeated any number of times.
- Right-click on the desired partition (usually C :) and select the "Shrink Volume" option.
- Now select the storage space by which you want to shrink the partition. This is then assigned to the new partition.
- Confirm the process with the "Zoom out" button and wait a moment. The memory then appears in the overview as "unallocated memory".
- Right-click on the free space and select the "New Simple Volume" option.
- Always confirm the following queries with "Next" and then with "Finish". You should only change the name and the drive letter of the partition.
- The new partition is then created and is ready for use. This process can be repeated any number of times.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to clone individual partitions.
