Windows 8: Gpedit.msc missing - what to do?
If the file gpedit.msc is missing on your PC or laptop with Windows 8, there is a good reason. We'll tell you exactly why.
Open Gpedit.msc in Windows 8
First of all, make sure that you really miss the Gpedit file. The quickest way to find out is to open it:
- To do this, press the [Windows] and [R] keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "gpedit.msc" there and confirm with "OK".
- If you get an error message, read on in the next paragraph.
Gpedit.msc is missing in Windows 8 - that's why
- The gpedit.msc command hides the editor for local group policies. Here advanced users can make numerous settings on the PC.
- However, the function is only available under Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise. The standard version of Windows 8 and 8.1 does not contain them.
- If you do not know which version of Windows you are using, press the [Windows] and [Pause] keys simultaneously. Here you can see whether you "only" have the standard version.
- However, if you absolutely need the editor for a setting, you do not have to despair: You can also make most changes via the registry.
