In Windows 8 it is possible to set up parental controls for your children. You can choose exactly when and how long your child can be on the PC and which applications and apps they can use. In this practical tip we explain the details to you.
How to set up an account for your child
First of all, you need to create a new account for your child. Simply follow the steps below.
- Open the Charm Bar by swiping from the right edge of the screen to the center on a touchscreen. When using a mouse, you must move the mouse pointer to the top right corner of the screen.
- Click on "Settings" in the Charm Bar and then on "Change PC Settings".
- Tap or click Accounts, then tap Other Accounts.
- Choose Add Account, and then click or tap Add Child Account. Alternatively, you can enter an email address for the account.
- Then follow the on-screen instructions.
- After creating the account, open the Charm Bar again.
- Click on "Search" in the Charm Bar and enter "Control Panel" in the search field. Then click or tap on "Control Panel".
- Enter "Family Safety" in the search field of the Control Panel and then click or tap on "Family Safety". Here you only have to select your child's account and then land in the overview.

You can now set up various child locks for your child.
- Under "Web filtering" you can choose which websites your child can visit. There are lists prepared by Windows. You should also use this as it is almost impossible to filter all adult content.
- Under "Time Limits" you can choose how long your child can use the PC. You can give your child a daily time credit and / or set certain times at which the child can use the computer.
- With the "Windows Store and Game Restrictions" you determine which apps your child can use. For example, you can set a maximum approved age rating for the apps.
- Under "Activity reports" you can check exactly which websites your child visits how often, how long and at what time your child is on the PC and which files have been downloaded.
