Windows 8: Disable hibernation
The hibernation in Windows 8 can sometimes not be easily deactivated. It is activated by default and must first be switched off in a menu. Some of the settings are not available under certain versions of Windows. In this practical tip, we will explain how you can still switch off the idle state.
Deactivate hibernation in Windows 8 - in the menu
The easiest way to deactivate hibernation is via the energy options:
- Press [Windows] key + [X] and select the "Power Options".
- In the left column click on "Select what should happen when the power button is pressed".
- Then click on the note "Some settings are currently not available", if it exists. You may need to enter your password now.
- Now remove the tick from the sub-item "Hibernation" and select "Save changes".
Deactivate hibernation in Windows 8 - by command
Some of the fields described above are not available. In this case you have to make the changes manually. For this you need the command prompt. Don't worry - you don't need any programming knowledge to deactivate hibernation.
- Press the [Windows] key + [R], type "cmd" and click OK. A console opens.
- If you want to deactivate the idle state, enter "powercfg / hibernate off" or shorter "powercfg / H off" and confirm with [Enter].
- To switch hibernation on again, enter "powercfg / hibernate on" or "powercfg / H on" in the same window.
- If you get an error message, it is either a typo or an inappropriate version of Windows. Another practical tip tells you how to deactivate standby in Windows 7.
