If you want to speed up your system somewhat under Windows 8, you can switch off numerous unnecessary services. In the following we have provided instructions for both beginners and advanced users with which you can safely deactivate the services.
Windows 8: Turn off unnecessary services for beginners
Even if you are not really familiar with computers, you can speed up your computer. To do this, switch off the services that are not required to start the computer. At the same time, you stay on the safe side.
- Press the "Windows" and "R" keys on your keyboard at the same time, so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "msconfig" in the input field and confirm your entry with "OK".
- A small window opens in which you switch to the "Services" tab.
- If you activate the "Hide all Microsoft services" option below, you will only see the services that you can deactivate relatively safely.
- Go through each service individually and consider for yourself whether it has to be started with Windows. For example, if the updater is from a program, it can be deactivated without hesitation. However, if you deactivate Apple's "Bonjour" service, iTunes will be completely unusable. Therefore, pay close attention to whether the service is needed or not. If necessary, google after work.
- To deactivate a service, remove the tick in front of the point and then click on the "OK" button.
- The next time the computer is started, the service will no longer be loaded. If problems occur, simply reactivate the service in the same way.
Windows 8: Switch off unnecessary Windows services for advanced users
If you have a little more knowledge of computers, you can also deactivate some of the Windows services that are not absolutely necessary. Before you turn off a service, however, you should be sure that you really don't need it. In the worst case, an incorrect deactivation leads to a faulty system.
- Press the "Windows" and "R" keys on your keyboard at the same time, so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "services.msc" in the input field and confirm your entry with "OK".
- Here you have an overview of all services including Windows.
- Right-click to select a service and select "Properties" from the context menu. Under Start type you can now select the "Deactivated" option and confirm your decision with "OK".
- You can find and deactivate the unnecessary services of third-party software better using the above instructions. The list below shows which Windows services you can deactivate using these instructions.
Disable unnecessary Windows services
Not all of these services can be switched off in every case. Windows can only survive without these services. Always check whether you need the service in your case or not. For this purpose, read the description on the left for each service and, if in doubt, leave the service activated.
