Windows 8: Install unsigned drivers - how it works
Installing unsigned drivers can pose a security risk to the system. Therefore, the installation under Windows 8 is largely blocked and can no longer be fully activated. However, if you want to put an older scanner back into operation, for example, you may not have a signed driver for it. With these tips, the installation will still work.
Step 1: Boot the computer with advanced start options
To get access to all functions, you have to start up your Windows 8 PC with advanced start options.
- Close all programs, then position the mouse pointer in the lower right corner and click on "Settings" in the Charms bar.
- Then select "Change PC settings" and click on the "General" category.
- Scroll down and click on "Restart now" in the "Advanced system start" area.
Step 2: install unsigned drivers
Wait for your PC to start up. Then do the following:
- In the following menu, select "Troubleshoot" and then "Advanced options".
- Now click on the "Start Settings" tile. With "Restart" you organize the next reboot of the system so that Windows displays a start dialog with some special options.
- Select item 8 "Deactivate driver signature enforcement" by pressing the [F8] key.
- Windows then continues as usual to the lock screen where you log in. However, the driver installation lock is temporarily deactivated.
Now you can install the driver. After the next system start, the unsigned driver lock is automatically reactivated, but all drivers already installed continue to work. If you want to install or update other unsigned drivers, you have to repeat the entire procedure.
