First of all, you should check your PC for faulty system files. You can do this with Windows board tools:
- Open the start menu or the start page of Windows and type "cmd".
- Right-click on the "Command Prompt" result and select "Run as administrator".
- Enter "sfc / SCANNOW" in the window and confirm with Enter.
- Windows now searches for corrupt files and repairs them. The process can take a few minutes.
Check Windows: Speed Check
You can get an overview of the performance of the computer through the performance index under Windows 7. The performance index is no longer available under Windows 8 and 10, the tool Win Experience Index provides a remedy.
- In Windows 7 you will find the performance index in the Control Panel under "System".
- Areas such as processor and graphics performance, hard disk speed and RAM are evaluated.
- The worst result is 1, the best 9.9. A maximum of 7.9 points is achieved under Windows 7.
- The overall rating corresponds to the worst partial rating.
- Write down the results. If your PC later gets worse results on a new test, you should find out the cause.
- As an alternative to the performance index, you can check the computing power of your PC with PCMark 8. The tool simulates typical applications and then evaluates your PC.
- You can use the 3DMark tool to check the graphics performance. It works similarly to PCMark 8, but focuses on graphics requirements.
Security check: scan Windows for viruses
Of course, a comprehensive virus scan is also part of the Windows scan:
- With the free Sardu tool, you can create an emergency disc or USB stick from which you can start your PC and scan for viruses.
- Microsoft also offers a reliable virus and malware removal tool. The free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is also considered reliable.
Windows check: check hard disk
- You can check your hard disk with Windows board tools: The command line tool "Chkdsk" constantly monitors your hard disk in the background and reports on serious errors.
- To start the tool manually, open the command prompt (cmd) again and enter the command "chkdsk c: / f". The computer restarts and checks drive C for errors.
- With the free tool Crystal Disk Info, you can keep an eye on temperature and SMART values.
- The CrystalDiskMark tool is available from the same manufacturer. This will take a look at the speed of your plate.

- The more programs you install on your PC, the more programs accumulate in the Startup folder.
- Ban unnecessary programs from the autostart to noticeably improve the start time of your computer.
- You can check the result with the Wise Care 365 tool.
Stability check: Sweat Windows
- If your PC is in good shape up to this point, you can properly challenge it again with a stability check.
- This way you will discover possible problems with peak loads and you will not be surprised in an emergency if Windows gets down on its knees.
- The Prime95 tool is suitable for this.
- Instead of using additional tools, you can also use the Windows calculator.
- Open the scientific view, type in a five-digit number and click "n!" to calculate the factorial of the number. This takes Windows to the utmost.
- However, this only works with the older versions of Windows. On Windows 10, you can no longer use the trick.
