Windows: Limit CPU usage - how it works
If some processes have extremely high CPU utilization, you can limit them with special software. We'll show you exactly how it works.
Limit CPU usage under Windows
- Older programs in particular are often not adapted to work with multi-core processors. As a result, CPU usage on newer computers increases significantly.
- With the free software "Battle Encoder Shirase" you can limit the CPU usage for each process under Windows.
- Linux users do not have to do without a corresponding tool either: With the "CPU limit" program, which is also free of charge, the whole thing also works under Ubuntu and other Linux systems.
Windows: Limit CPU utilization of individual processes
- Open the website of the "Battle Encoder Shirase" and download the latest version.
- Open the downloaded ZIP file and start the "BES.exe" file.
- Click on the "Target" button at the top right, select the desired process with a double click and confirm with "Yes".
- The process is limited. You can further configure the limitation using the "Control" button:
- For example, if you set the value to "33 percent", the maximum possible CPU utilization of the process is reduced by 33 percent. This process can therefore only occupy 77 percent of the total CPU utilization.
- Note: You can't do much wrong here. However, do not limit processes that are important to the system or that you do not know. If you have any problems, you can use the "Unlimit all" button to undo your changes.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to reduce your CPU utilization.
