Windows Explorer: export favorites - all information
In Windows, you can export favorites created in Windows Explorer and transfer them to another computer. How this works and which problems arise with Windows 10, we explain on this page.
Windows 7: Export Windows Explorer favorites
Note: You need a storage medium, such as a USB stick, to export the favorites.
- Start Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder in which Windows is located (usually under drive C).
- Under this folder you will also find the "Favorites" folder. Mark the favorites you want to export and drag the files onto the storage medium.
- Mark the favorites you want to export and drag the files onto the storage medium.
- Now you can upload the favorites to the new computer by placing the files in the corresponding folder under Windows.
Windows 7 favorites cannot be transferred to Windows 10
In Windows 10, there are no more favorites in Explorer - this creates problems.
- Windows Explorer now only has so-called "quick access", which roughly corresponds to the favorites.
- However, not only folders that you are actively adding are displayed there (pushpin). In quick access, Windows also automatically saves the folders that are used frequently.
- The quick access is structured differently than the favorites in Windows 7. It is no longer a folder with a list that can be copied and transferred so easily.
- You must therefore add the desired file paths individually to the quick access - a transfer from Windows 7 is not possible.
