If your computer has problems and your Windows Explorer keeps crashing, this can often be due to third parties. In this article, we explain step by step how to fix the error.
Solving the problem: Windows Explorer always crashes
If your Windows Explorer keeps crashing, limit the sources of errors first. For our first proposal to solve the problem, you need a tool, which we will show you in the following instructions:
- Download the AutoRuns for Windows tool.
- To open the downloaded ZIP file, you may need additional software such as WinRAR.
- Open the ZIP archive and start the file called " autoruns.exe ".
- Switch to the " Explorer " tab at the top of the tool, here you will find all the necessary settings to correct the error.
- Now look for the categories " HKCU \ Software \ Classes \ * \ ShellEx \ ContextMenuHandlers " and " HKLM \ Software \ Classes \ * \ ShellEx \ ContextMenuHandlers " in the list.
- Remove all checkmarks from the categories and restart your computer. Tip : On the first restart, only deactivate the options for which the "Publisher" is not Microsoft.
- If the Explorer no longer crashes, you have identified the source of the error. You can now tick the boxes one after the other to find the exact culprit.
Another solution: Windows Explorer keeps crashing
If the above troubleshooting guide doesn't work for you, expand the search box. To do this, search the following categories:
- HKLM \ Software \ Classes \ AllFileSystemObjects \ ShellEx \ ContextMenuHandlers
- HKCU \ Software \ Classes \ Directory \ ShellEx \ ContextMenuHandlers
- HKLM \ Software \ Classes \ Directory \ ShellEx \ ContextMenuHandlers
- Follow the same procedure here as in the previous paragraph. Once the causer has been identified, you can either google for the problem keyword or update the program.
