Windows: high disk usage - what to do?
If the disk usage is too high, the system does not work reliably. In this practical tip, we will tell you what you should do in such a case.
High disk usage on Windows - you should do that
With the following tricks, Windows will run faster again and the load on the hard drive will decrease.
- Open the task manager. Switch to the "Processes" tab and end all processes that you do not need. Select this and click on "End Process" below. Then confirm the process.
- Too many autostart programs may be causing a high load. Therefore, open the start menu and enter "msconfig" in the search field. Confirm this with the Enter key.
- Here you have to select the tab "System start". Remove the ticks from all programs that you do not necessarily need for the autostart.
- All services of the PC are displayed in the "Services" tab. First tick the "Hide all Microsoft services" checkbox and remove the checkmark for all services that you do not necessarily need.
- Save the changes with "OK" and then restart the PC so that they take effect.
- Too many installed programs can also be responsible for your problems. Therefore, go to the Control Panel, select "Programs & Features" and uninstall all programs that you do not necessarily need.
- It can often help if you change the energy settings from "balanced" to "high performance". You can do this under "Control Panel" and "Power Options".
Other options: high disk utilization
- Faulty or missing system files may also cause this problem. To check this, open the start menu and switch to the "Accessories" folder. Right-click on the "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator".
- Then enter the "sfc / scannow" command to start the scan. Wait for it to complete. Any errors are automatically corrected.
- You can easily check whether there is a hard disk defect. Open the "Computer" item via the start button and right-click on the respective hard disk. Select "Properties" from the context menu and then open the "Tools" tab. With a click on "Check now" the check is scheduled for the next system start.
