Is your Kindle not recognized after Windows is plugged in? In this practical tip we will show you how you can solve the problem.
Kindle is not recognized - check hardware
First, you should check whether the hardware used is defective.
- Try connecting the Kindle to various USB ports on your PC. Only one connection on your PC may be defective. Also test with other USB devices whether the ports are working.
- You should also test another cable. If the cable breaks, a faultless connection cannot be established. You can use any USB cable with a micro USB connection to connect it. These are often included with smartphones.
- To ensure that the Kindle is not defective, you should connect the Kindle to a third-party PC. If this is recognized there, there appears to be a software problem. In this case, you should update your Kindle's software.
- However, sometimes the Kindle isn't charged enough. Charge the Kindle to a proper power source for a few minutes (USB ports sometimes run out of power to charge the device). Only when the Kindle has loaded a certain "minimum value" does it connect to the PC.
Remove the faulty device from the Device Manager
When you connect a device to the PC for the first time, Windows installs various drivers and adds the device to the system. However, some things can go wrong here. The next time you plug it in, Windows tries to load the incorrect data. With a trick you can delete them and plug in the device again "for the first time".
- Connect the Kindle to a working USB port using the USB cable.
- Open the device manager. It is best to use the built-in search function in Windows.
- Under "Input devices", "Drives" and "Portable devices" look for devices with the name "Kindle" or a "faulty device".
- Double-click the device and select the "Driver" tab in the next window.
- Select the item "Uninstall". Click "OK" in the next window.
- Then close Device Manager and disconnect Kindle. Wait a few seconds and connect it to the PC again. Now the PC should reinstall the drivers and in most cases the Kindle will be recognized correctly.
- Sometimes there can be complications with drive letters. You can read about how to fix this error in this practical tip.
By the way, with the free Windows program "Send to Kindle" you can also wirelessly transfer files to your Kindle via WLAN - without any USB.
