Windows runtime error 216: Check system for viruses
First of all, you should check your system. The error could be caused by a virus or a defect in the registry.
- Download and install the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware tool.
- With the tool you can now check your PC for malware and remove the finds.
- If the scan did not resolve the issue, you should check your registry for errors.
- If checking the registry is not successful, the error is caused by a program or service running in the background. Read how to locate the service in the next paragraph.

- Open the Run window with the key combination [Win] + [R].
- Type in the "msconfig" command and confirm with Enter.
- Click on the "Services" tab.
- Check "Hide all Microsoft services".
- Now deactivate a part, for example half of the services, and confirm with "OK".
- Restart the PC. If the error message reappears, reactivate the deactivated services and deactivate the next part. The next restart follows.
- If the error no longer occurs, reactivate some of the previously deactivated services and restart.
- When you have located the service that caused the error, deactivate it if you do not need it.
- If you still need the service, uninstall the associated program and reinstall it.
