Windows Movie Maker no longer starts - what to do?
From time to time it happens that Windows Movie Maker does not start from one day to the next. Find out how to get the WMM working again here.
Install the latest version of Windows Movie Maker
Often it is enough to give Windows Movie Maker an update.
- If you are using Windows XP, Windows 7 or Windows 8, download "Windows Movie Maker 2012".
- If you have Windows Vista, you need "Windows Live Movie Maker 2011".
- Install the WMM on your computer and then restart it.
Windows Movie Maker does not start - update DirectX
Windows Movie Maker works closely with Microsoft's DirectX. If there are any discrepancies, Windows Movie Maker no longer runs correctly and crashes.
- Download the current DirectX version and install it on your computer.
- Then restart your PC.
- You should now be able to work with the WMM again.
Windows Movie Maker system requirements
If your Movie Maker crashes in the middle of video editing, it may also be because your computer does not meet the system requirements. Microsoft states this as follows:
- The Movie Maker requires at least one GB of RAM for editing SD videos and two GB for videos in HD format.
- Your processor should clock with at least 2.4 GHz. It can also be less with four- or eight-core processors.
- The graphics card must support DirectX 9.0.
Tip: Here we show you how to export your created videos as MP4 using Windows Movie Maker.
