Windows: Deactivate SMBv1 - how it works
SMBv1 is an outdated network protocol for the transfer of data. Here's why you should turn it off and how it works.
Windows: Therefore you should deactivate SMBv1
- SMB is a network protocol for transferring files. However, the first version of it is out of date and therefore no longer secure.
- A vulnerability in SMBv1, for example, has caused the cryptovirus Petya 2 to spread within LAN networks.
- Since SMBv1 is no longer used anyway, you can limit this security risk and safely deactivate the network protocol.
Deactivate SMBv1 under Windows - that's how it's done
- To permanently remove the security risk SMBv1 from your computer, open the Control Panel, click on "Programs" and then on "Programs and Features".
- Now press "Activate or deactivate Windows features" on the left and grant administrator rights if necessary.
- Now you will see a list of all Windows features that are available on your PC. Deactivate the checkmark at "SMB 1.0 / CIFS File Sharing Support". Confirm with OK. Now SMBv1 no longer works on your computer.
- Note: If the entry "SMB 1.0 / CIFS File Sharing Support" is not available on your computer, there is no need for action because the network protocol is then not active.
