Windows Update has stopped working. What to do?
If Windows Update no longer works, there can be various reasons. We'll show you how to solve the problem.
Troubleshooter: Windows Update has stopped working
In most cases the problem is known and can be solved by Windows itself:
- Download and run the following tool from Microsoft.
- If you click the "Next" button, Windows automatically searches for possible problems.
- If problems are found, Windows tries to solve them independently. You will then receive a message about the success.
Fix other problems with Windows Update
If the automatic repair doesn't work, the problem could be one of the following:
- Time: If the date and time are not set correctly under Windows, this leads to problems with Windows Update. Continue reading in the practical tip "Windows: Check time and date".
- Storage: Updates are only installed if there is enough storage space. Therefore, check the available memory.
- System Restore: If all of this did not help, all that remains is system restore. Choose as early as possible when Windows Update was still working.
Windows updates no longer work: Microsoft discontinues support
Windows XP and Vista were hit years ago, now Windows 7 is also due: Microsoft is discontinuing support for the operating system and will gradually no longer deliver new features and bug fixes via update.
- If you want to continue to receive updates and security fixes, you have to switch to the new Windows 10. Users of the earlier versions of Windows can still get the upgrade for free.
- Everyone else can save money with a new notebook with Windows 10 pre-installed. Relatively strong and well-equipped models are available from around 250 euros. The support for these models will not be discontinued for the next few years.
