Windows: Install and set up the webcam - how it works
In this practical tip, we explain how to install a webcam on your Windows PC and set it up so that you can use it, for example, for video calls.
How to install a webcam
In the first step, you should install the correct drivers for your webcam. You can find these, for example, on the supplied CD or on the manufacturer's website as a download. Make sure that the drivers are suitable for the camera model and operating system used. Then connect the webcam to your PC.
- If you don't have suitable drivers ready, you can simply connect the camera to the PC. With a little luck, Windows will automatically find the right drivers and set them up automatically.
- If you have problems installing the correct drivers, we will show you in another article how to install device drivers under Windows.
Set up webcam using the example of Skype
After you have correctly installed the drivers of your webcam, it is basically ready for use and you can use it for video calls or for taking pictures, for example. The procedure is similar in all programs, for example in Skype you do the following:
- Open the Skype options and select the "Video settings".
- Choose the webcam to use. You should now see an image preview. Click "Save" to confirm your selection.
If your webcam is working properly, you can also use it as a surveillance camera, for example. In our next practical tip, we will explain how to set up your webcam as a surveillance camera.
