You can start Windows XP in safe mode - to remove malware such as GVU or federal trojans from the system.
Start Safe Mode
You can only start Safe Mode while your computer is booting. If your PC is still switched on, shut it down.
- After pressing the power button on your computer, start pressing the "DEL" key several times. Depending on the BIOS version, alternatively press [F8].
- A menu opens. Here you can choose between the different modes. Use the arrow keys to navigate to "Safe Mode".
- Confirm your selection with "Enter". The computer now starts XP in a slimmed-down version. Only the most necessary drivers and settings are loaded.
If the computer has started up, the bottom of your Windows XP desktop also says that you are working in safe mode. If you restart your PC, it will start up in "normal" mode as usual.
The three secured modes
You can choose between three modes.
- The "normal" safe mode.
- Safe mode with network drivers. Your computer loads all the drivers necessary for a network connection and access to the Internet.
- Safe mode with command prompt. Then cmd.exe is started after startup.
In our tip we used a computer with a Phoenix AwardBIOS version 6.00PG. With other BIOS versions you may have to press another key to start the selection menu (1st point). The tip also works for other versions of Windows.
