Windows XP won't start - you can do that
Windows XP is a cult operating system and is still used by some users. This guide explains what you can do if XP no longer starts.
Windows XP does not start: troubleshooting and tips
You can usually fix this problem yourself relatively quickly with a few simple steps.
- Press the F8 key during the boot process until a selection list appears. Select the "Safe Mode" item here and wait until it is fully loaded.
- Now you can, for example, uninstall software that you installed before this error. A single tool may be starting problems.
- You can then restart your PC as usual.
- However, if this tip does not help, you will need the Windows XP CD. Insert this into the drive and restart the PC. If you do not have this, you must first create a boot CD.
- Then press any key to boot from the CD. After the setup program is completely loaded, press the "R" key to start the repair function.
- Now press the "1" key to open the console. If necessary, enter your password.
- To repair the boot sectors of your system, type the command "fixnbr" and confirm with Enter. You must confirm this process with "J".
- Wait for the process to finish. Then enter the command "fixboot c:" so that the hard disk can be repaired. Confirm again with Enter and "J".
- With "Exit" you leave the repair console and the PC is restarted. If your computer still does not start up, please also note the information in our separate practical tip.
Support for XP was discontinued in 2014 - but what does that mean? You will find the answer in the next practical tip.
