You can install Windows XP not only from the original setup CD, but also from a USB stick. This manual explains how to prepare it accordingly and then carry out the installation.
Windows XP: Installation from a USB stick
If you want to install Windows XP from a USB stick, it is not sufficient to drag the files and directories on the installation CD onto the stick. Instead, you should use a special program like WinSetupFromUSB to prepare the disk:
- Download the free software WinSetupFromUSB. Start the EXE file to extract the application data to any directory on your hard drive. Then start the program.
- Select your USB stick in the dropdown list under "USB disk selection and format tools". If this is not displayed, click the Refresh button.
- Check the box next to "Auto format it with FB". Leave the other formatting settings unchanged.
- Check the box "Windows 2000 / XP / 2003" and enter the root directory with the installation files for Windows XP. For example, this can be the original data carrier in your DVD drive. If you use an ISO file from Windows XP as a basis, you must first mount it as a virtual drive or extract its contents into a directory on your hard disk.
- Now click on the Go button and wait for the process to finish. Please note that all files on the data carrier will be deleted. The USB stick is now ready for installation.
