Set up WLAN: Which channel to choose

In many routers, you can choose the WLAN channel yourself. We'll show you which channel is best for you.
Set up WLAN: analyze the environment
If there are several routers in your area, it is particularly important to find an interference-free channel. The channels basically differ in frequency:
- inSSIDer Home: The free program "inSSIDer Home" lists all available WLAN networks in your area. This tells you which channel the other routers are transmitting on and whether channels overlap. How to find a free channel quickly. Alternatively, you can also use the free app Wifi-Analyzer.
- 2.4 GHz: Most routers transmit in the 2.4 GHz band. The channels range from 1 to 13. The frequencies overlap in 3 channels. If there is another router near you, select a WiFi channel that is 3 channels higher or lower. In Europe there are three channels that are free of overlap (channels 1, 6 and 11). It is better not to use channels 9 and 10 because microwave ovens are operated at the same frequency.
- 5 GHz: Not all devices support the 5 GHz band. While there are only 3 overlap-free channels in the 2.4 GHz band, there are 28 in the 5 GHz band. The 5 GHz band is less susceptible to interference. You can find out which channels are permitted in Europe here.
Once you have found a suitable channel, you can then measure your WLAN speed.
