WLAN is offered on the Deutsche Bahn ICE, but you cannot use it easily. We'll show you what precautions you need to take before logging in so that you can even surf for free.
How to use the free WiFi in the ICE
- Since December 2016, all ICEs have had free WiFi - also for second class. This is made possible by new and more powerful features in the trains. The new system is also intended to ensure that available capacities are shared among all passengers as fairly as possible.
- But the great offer also has its limits: each second-class customer has only 200 MB of data volume available. Then the speed is reduced. Throttling is not provided for in the first class.
- To take advantage of the offer, simply connect to the "WIFIonICE" WiFi network. Then you have to open your browser and log in. Now you have access to the internet.
- According to various reports, the actually available speed is between one and 10 MBit per second.
WLAN in the ICE - not without security gaps?
It's no longer a secret that you shouldn't send sensitive data over unencrypted WLAN connections. But there are also other security gaps in the ICE:
- To be able to connect to the Internet on the ICE, you must first accept the terms of use on a website, only then will you have access to the network.
- This website provides some additional information, such as your previous data consumption or your MAC and IP address and the current location of the train. So far, that would not be a problem if this information was only available to you.
- The vulnerability is that other websites can tap this data when you are connected to the WiFi on the train. This is not necessarily bad with information about your data consumption, but it looks different with your current location.
- The good news: Files or other content that you have stored on your devices cannot be read. A possible attacker does not have direct access to your smartphone or laptop via this vulnerability.
On the next page we will show you tricks on how to book the associated train journey cheaply - including 1st class.
