You can install a WLAN card in your PC or notebook in just a few steps. This practical tip tells you what to look out for.
Install the WLAN card in the desktop PC
If there is no corresponding module installed on the motherboard of your home computer, you can easily retrofit a WLAN adapter. Pay attention to the compatibility with your operating system and your router.
- Disconnect your switched off computer from the power supply and open the casing on one side.
- Depending on the model, slide the card into a free PCI or PCI Express slot on your mainboard. You may have to remove a placeholder on the back panel of the case first.
- Fix the new hardware to the housing with the small screw and close it. Then screw the antennas onto the adapter from the outside.
- If the card is not recognized at startup, install the necessary drivers from the manufacturer's CD or homepage.
Upgrade laptop WiFi
If your laptop has problems with network access, it may make sense to replace the WLAN adapter. First, research in the manual or at support what the manufacturer says about such independent interventions.
- First you need to get inside your notebook. Depending on the model, this is easier or more complicated. At best, all you have to do is remove a few screws on the back.
- The wireless network antenna on laptops is housed in a space-saving manner inside the housing. Carefully remove it from the old WLAN card using a flat screwdriver or by hand.
- Now you can replace the modules. The compact mini PCI cards are usually used here. Pay attention to the position of the scar on the slot and the number of screw connections.
- Finally, connect the antenna cable to the corresponding contacts. Then put all the screws and the case back in place. When everything is in place, you can help with gentle pressure.
