Increase WiFi range
If you do not have WiFi reception in the basement or in the attic, it is worth increasing the range of the radio network. We'll show you how.
The right location to increase the WiFi range
The router is often set up directly next to the DSL connection. While this is practical, it also limits the range of the WLAN in many cases.
- A central location should be chosen, especially when the recipients are spread over the whole house. If necessary, try out several locations and test the reception.
- Immediately around the router there should not be too many sources of interference. A router on the shelf or directly enclosed by two objects makes little sense. It should be as free as possible.
WLAN standard and radio channel
- WLAN standard: If possible, use the WLAN standard "802.11n". This is the latest radio standard. He uses some intelligent methods to extend the range of the WLAN.
- Radio channel: Each router transmits on a specific channel. Such a channel is already specified in every router. Most users don't change it. The result: Not only your router, but also that of your neighbors is transmitting on the same channel. In some routers such as the Fritzbox, you can see which channel is least busy and then switch to it.

Reinforcing WLAN: Eliminate sources of interference
- The biggest killers of WLAN networks are DECT phones, Bluetooth devices and microwaves. All of these devices also send out waves and thus obstruct the waves of the router.
- Even metallic objects in the immediate vicinity of the router disrupt the range of the radio network enormously.
Increase WLAN range with a repeater
If the WLAN is not sufficient despite all the measures, you can amplify the signal using a repeater. Such devices either receive the WLAN signal and pass it on, or receive the signal via the socket and send it on from there. You can find more information about WLAN amplifiers in this practical tip.
