Make WLAN secure: This is how you can secure your network
Many hackers have specialized in attacking WLAN networks. In this practical tip, we will show you how to make your WLAN secure using simple means.
Make WiFi secure: Use secure encryption and a strong password
The first step to secure WiFi is to choose secure encryption and a strong password for your network:
- To do this, log in to the configuration page of your router.
- Under "WLAN or" Security "you will find the settings for your wireless network.
- You should choose the "WPA2" standard for encryption. This is currently the most secure and widely used encryption method. In contrast to WEP, this cannot be cracked within a short time.
- You should also set and use a strong password for your network.
Make WLAN secure: turn WLAN invisible and change names
Next, you should hide your WiFi and make it invisible to others. This means that new devices must know the exact name of the network and cannot simply search for it.
- Visit the configuration page for your WiFi network again.
- There is a setting similar to "Make radio network name visible", which you have to deactivate.
- We also recommend changing the name of your radio network to deviate from the factory setting. As with passwords, choose a random combination of letters, numbers and special characters.
- To be able to connect to your network from now on, you need to remember the exact name.
Make WLAN secure: Fixed IP address and MAC filter
As a last step, you should use your network with fixed IP addresses and switch on the MAC filter:
- Deactivate the DHCP server in the settings of your router and define static IP addresses.
- You should also activate the MAC address filter if it is possible in your router. This means that only previously defined MAC addresses can use your network.
- You have to enter your own MAC address in the filter settings.
