Baking powder can be found in almost every kitchen. However, only a few people can explain straight away what baking powder is made of. You will find all information here.
What is baking soda made of? These are the ingredients
- Some of the baking powder consists of double carbonate baking soda. The chemical name for this ingredient is sodium bicarbonate.
- A release agent is also included. This can either be wheat flour or wheat, corn, rice and tapioca starch.
- Another ingredient in baking soda is either monocalcium orthophosphate or disodium dihydrogen diphosphate. Both are acidulants.
How baking powder works in the dough
- When combined with moisture, the baking soda and acidulant react with each other.
- This chemical reaction releases CO2, i.e. carbon dioxide. The small gas bubbles in the dough ensure that it becomes loose.
- In order to prevent premature CO2 formation, the release agent binds the moisture.
You can do a lot more with baking soda than just baking
- If you have to clean the oven after baking, the baking ingredient will help you. You can also clean the hob with baking soda in one go.
- Baking powder can also be used in a variety of ways in the bathroom. The powder not only makes yellowed silicone joints white again. Even when removing make-up, baking soda is a practical helper.
- If you want to lighten your hair a few shades without chemicals, you can do that with the food too.
- If you rely on home remedies when removing stains, the baking soda does this in many cases.
