Word: The 5 most annoying functions
Microsoft Word can get on your nerves sometimes. This is why we show you with this practical tip the five most annoying Word functions and what you can do about them.
1. Nerve killer: Word spell checker keeps changing
Have you noticed this before? You enter a German text in Word, then insert an English paragraph and promptly everything is underlined in red. Then you have probably set up the automatic spell checker. We'll show you what you can do about it.
- If you do not want to completely deactivate the error check, you can simply change the language of the spell check.
- You can also temporarily turn off spell checking.
- Alternatively, you can turn off the "Automatically recognize language" function by clicking on "Language" at the bottom and also set German as the default language.
2. Nerve slayer: Many words are not recognized
Word also does not recognize many, sometimes familiar, words. You then have to add these to the dictionary manually. We show you how it works.
- First, use the spell checker. If Word does not know the word, simply add it by clicking on "Add to dictionary".
- If you have made a mistake, the wrong dictionary entries in Word can also be corrected.
3. Nerve killer: Inserting pictures confuses Word text
You have just finished editing a text in Word and then you want to insert a picture at the end. But what happens? Exactly, the whole text is torn out of its structure again and you have to put everything together with great effort. The only thing that helps is to place the pictures correctly so that you can continue working. We show how it's done.
- If the graphic has slipped behind the text, a little trick will help you so that you can still edit it. Here we show you how to adjust the graphic behind a text.
- You can also use Word to make the image transparent.
- It is also worthwhile if you crop the image correctly in Word. You can then more easily bring the slipping text back into place.
4. Nerve killer: Word overwrites letters
By default, this feature is turned off, but sometimes Word overwrites letters. In most cases, this function is not only annoying, but also takes a lot of time.
- It is best to deactivate the function again. We will therefore show you what you have to do to prevent Word from overwriting letters.
5. Nerve killer: page numbers should not be everywhere
When you insert page numbers, Word starts right at page one. But what if, for example, you still have a table of contents on page one or would like Word to insert the page numbers later? You can help yourself with a little trick.
- With Word, you must first insert a section break before you can determine for which areas page numbers should be set.
- Alternatively, we will also show you how to insert page numbers in Word only from page three.
In another practical tip, we will show you how to find synonyms in Word.
