Word error: reference source could not be found - what to do?

This Office error in Word says little about the cause. Here are some troubleshooting tips:
- If Word shows you this error, there is a problem with a text reference.
- This may have been caused by a change to the text.
- Therefore, try to restore the original text with [CTRL] + [Z]. This may solve the problem.
- In addition, you should make sure that the respective bookmark still exists in your document and has not been deleted.

Make bookmarks visible in Word - that's what you have to do
- Select the "File" tab at the top of Word and open the "Options" item here.
- Click on the "Advanced" entry on the left to open further options.
- Here you have to scroll down a little until you find the "Show document content" area.
- To show the bookmarks, check the box next to "Show bookmarks". The change is accepted with "OK".
- Wrong bookmarks are now displayed in the document with a square bracket ([).
