Word: Insert footnotes without automatic numbering
If you want to insert the footnotes in Word without automatic numbering, you need the appropriate option. We'll show you exactly how to do it.
Word: Switch off automatic numbering of the footnotes
Word automatically numbers the footnotes with consecutive numbers. The numbering cannot be switched off completely, but you can replace the numbers with a continuous character.
- Go to the "References" tab at the top of Word and look for the "Footnotes" category there.
- Click on the small arrow in the lower right of the category or use the "Insert footnote" button. Then the "Footnote and endnote" window opens.
- Now enter a desired symbol in the "User-defined" line, such as an asterisk (*).
- With the button "Apply", all footnotes are marked with an asterisk instead of a number.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to remove the footnote separator in Word.
