The cover page and the table of contents of your Word document should normally not contain any page numbers. In this practical tip you can read which settings you have to make.

Deactivate the "Link to previous" function and then select the "Page number" drop-down menu
Now choose where the page numbers should appear later.
Under "Page Number" you will now find the "Format Page Numbers" option.
Place a checkmark next to "Start at:" and enter a "1" in the text field.
To only display page numbers after the cover page and the table of contents, proceed as follows:
- Position the cursor on your second page, i.e. the table of contents.
- Under the " Page Layout " tab, click the " Breaks " drop-down menu. Here you select " Next page ". Now another page is added.
- Double-click the top or bottom edge of the third page.
- With one click you now have to deactivate the function " Link to previous page ".
- Open the " Number of Pages " drop-down menu. Select here where the page number should be later.
- The page number "3" will appear automatically on the third page. To change this to a "1", click on "Format page numbers " under " Page number ".
- Place a checkmark in the following window to " Start with: ". Enter a " 1 " in the corresponding text field and confirm it by clicking " OK ".
