To be able to edit protected documents in Word, you have to remove the write protection. We'll show you how to do it.
Word: Remove write protection with password
If you have not forgotten the password, you can easily unlock the document in this way.
- To do this, open the respective file in Word.
- Then click on " File "> " Information "> " Protect Document " and select " Restrict Editing ".
- You will now see your authorizations on the right-hand side. Click " Unprotect " here.
- Enter the password to release the document for editing.
Bypass write protection - With this trick it works
If you have lost the password for write protection, you can also bypass it:
- Press the key combination [ Ctrl ] + [ A ] to select the entire document.
- Then copy the selection with [ Ctrl ] + [ C ].
- Then open a new Word document.
- Here you paste the copied again with [ Ctrl ] + [ V ].
- Now you have the same content in another document, but you can edit it.
Alternative: password instead of write protection
In addition to write protection, Word also offers the option of protecting the document with a password, which you must enter before opening the document.
- To remove such a password, you first have to open the file with the said password.
- In the opened file, navigate to " File "> " Information "> " Protect Document ".
- If you click on the "Encrypt with password " option in the drop-down menu that appears, a dialog box with the current password will be displayed. Remove this line and then click " OK ".
- For the change to take effect, you must save the document again.
- Important : If you have forgotten the password for the file, there is no way to open the file again.
