Related Videos: Start page numbering at 1 on page 3 (May 2024).
It is not difficult to add a page number to a Word document from page 3 onwards. Not even if the numbering should start with 1 instead of 3. We will show you how to do it.
Step 1: break the Word document into sections
To be able to insert page numbers from page 3 onwards, you first have to structure your document in sections:
- Click at the very end of the text on the second page. This is usually the table of contents.
- Select the "Layout" tab in the menu and click "Breaks" and then "Next Page".
- You may have to move the text up on the next page by deleting the manually inserted paragraphs. Tip: Under "Start" you can show all paragraphs and breaks with a click on the paragraph symbol.
- On page 3, double-click in the footer area and deactivate the "Link to previous" option in the "Navigation" menu. You will find the menu in the middle, slightly at the top right in the menu bar.
Step 2: insert page numbers
- Click the footer on page 3 again and select "Page number" from the menu. Here you can choose a position and a design for your page numbers.
- Word now inserts the page number 3 by default. If you want to start at page 1, follow the steps below.
- Under "Page Number", click "Format Page Number".
- Under "Page numbering", select "Start at" and then enter the number 1 in the text field. Confirm with OK".
- Now, as usual, select where the numbering should be displayed in the "Page number" drop-down menu.
- Now your Word document begins to number the pages consecutively from the third, starting with page number 1.
