Word: Insert column break - how it works
You can insert a column break in Word using the menu or a keyboard shortcut. In this practical tip we will show you how.
Word: Insert column break via the menu
With a column break in Word you can specify that you want to jump from one column to the next. To do this, you must have already formatted your document in columns. We will show you in your own practical tip how to write in columns in Word. You can insert a column break as follows:
- Use the cursor to click behind the last character after which you want to insert the break. This is usually at the end of a sentence after the period.
- Now click on "Layout" or "Page layout" in the ribbon.
- Under "Page setup" click on "Breaks" and select "Column break".

You can also insert a column break using a key combination:
- Use the cursor to click behind the last character after which you want to insert the break.
- Use the key combination [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [Enter] to insert a column break.
