Word Show line number: How to count lines in Word
In the following practical tip, we will explain how to display and count line numbers in Microsoft Office Word. If you have to comply with a certain number of lines for a document, you can check whether you have written too many or too few lines.
MS Office: Show line numbers in Word
By default, Word does not display the line number. To turn the display on, follow these steps:
- Open a document in Microsoft Office Word.
- In Word, right-click the status bar at the bottom.
- Select "Line number" in the selection menu.

- In the bottom status bar you will now find the "Line" entry. The number behind tells you which line your cursor is currently in. If you want to count how many lines your document already has, click on the last line of the document. Word will now show you how many lines you have already written.
- Alternatively, you can find statistics on the line numbers under "File"> "Information"> "Properties"> "Extended Properties". You can also see how to get these statistics on the screenshot.
