Wordpress: edit 404 page - how it works
If you edit page 404 in WordPress, visitors will be compensated at least with a nice message if a page is not found. Here we show where you can edit the page exactly.
Wordpress: How to edit the 404 page
The best solution would of course be that the page "404 - Page not found" does not appear at all, that is, all references on your page are correct. Nevertheless, a mistake can creep in and then at least one appealing page should point to it.
- In your admin area you will find the item "Design" in the left side menu. Click on the point, the sub-point "Editor" should appear.
- If you click on "Editor", a list of files appears, including the file "404.php" and a code window in the middle. Here you can edit the 404 file.
- If the file does not appear in the list, access the server with an FTP program. There you will find the 404.php under "wp-content / themes / default".
- In the PHP file, search for "" between the h2 tags. You can replace this part with your own code - as long as you are familiar with PHP.
Alternative: A 404 plugin
If you have no idea about PHP, you should stay away from editing the file. Instead, use a plugin instead.
- The 404 error page can easily be pretted up with special plugins such as "Forty Four - 404 Plugin for WordPress".
