Set up WordPress on the Android smartphone
If you blog on the go, you should set up WordPress on your Android smartphone. The blogging service provides its own app for this. In this practical tip, we show you how to maintain your blog using your smartphone.
Set up WordPress app for Android
With the WordPress app, you can also manage your WordPress blog using Android smartphones or tablets:
- First download and install the WordPress app for Android.
- Then log in with your WordPress access data. To do this, your Wordpress blog should be connected to the official wordpress.com page. If it is not, you have to enter your domain manually.
Register self-hosted WordPress blog in the app
- Open the WordPress app.
- Click on "Add self-hosted website" (see picture).
- Now enter your username, password and the domain of your website.
- Finally click on "Register" and wait for the app to connect to your WordPress site.
WordPress app tips
When you create posts or pages on your smartphone, you expect some differences from the web application:
- You cannot manage plugins or your theme in the WordPress app. The app only allows you to create or edit posts and pages.
- The preview of your posts never exactly matches the final presentation. If you create mobile posts from scratch, you should always check their presentation in the browser after publication.
- When you log in for the first time, the app scans your data for a long time. If your smartphone or tablet is on a slow network, you may experience login problems. Therefore, test the first login via a sufficiently fast WLAN or HSDPA.
These practical tips were tested with a LG Nexus 5 with WordPress 2.9 and Android 4.4.2. In iOS you log in in a similar way. You can always find the current WordPress app for iOS devices in our download area.
