Who secures his WLAN router with WPA2 encryption is perfectly protected? Unfortunately, this widespread opinion does not apply. With a few simple tips, you can significantly increase the security of your router.
WPA2 encryption - what is it?
What is actually behind the encryption method?
- WPA2 is currently the most secure encryption standard for WLAN networks. This is how you prevent potential hackers from simply connecting to your router.
- To do this, the backup uses an encryption algorithm called AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). This offers a dynamic key with which the transmitted data is concealed.
- This way you prevent strangers from "reading" your downloads or simply getting your router's password. The latter was possible without much effort, for example, with the outdated WEP technology.
WPA2 encryption is activated by default on new routers. However, you should still check your router's WiFi settings. We explain here how to call them up with telecom routers, this practical tip will help you with the FritzBox.
The right password: the weak point of WPA2 encryption
Even the best encryption is useless without a secure password. Therefore, you should choose your password carefully:
- Avoid simple terms like "password" or "12345". These are usually cracked after a few attempts. With current hacking tools, even normal words such as your partner's nickname are no obstacle.
- Instead, use a password with at least 12 characters. As many special characters and numbers as possible should be included. So the password can never be guessed by accident.
- To be on the safe side, you can have your password created by a program: The free "Password Generator" definitely creates a secure password. To do this, simply tick the "characters" as in the screenshot and choose a sufficient password length.
Set up Mac filters and lock out unwanted guests
In addition to WPA2 encryption, current routers also offer an optional MAC filter. With this you can set exactly which devices are allowed to access your network:
- To do this, you first need the MAC addresses of your devices. You can usually find these unique numbers in the settings of your smartphone or computer.
- Then enter all device IDs in the configuration program of your router and activate the filter. Now only registered smartphones and PCs can connect to your network.
With these settings, you can get practically everything out of WPA2 encryption. If you want to protect yourself further, you can find additional tips for your WiFi network here.
